Stronger Things conference 2026
New local
June ended and July began with us reconnecting with our mission, networking with other members of the VCSE (Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector).
It is easy to lose focus, whether in our personal lives or in business. Life can knock us off course, but what matters is reconnecting with our purpose: the reason behind our goals and the mission that drives us.
Realigning with our mission has been energising.
Over the past month, we have attended a number of local health, education and community events, including:
Women’s Wellness, hosted by our friends at Kenko Clinic;
Buckinghamshire Council’s Family Information Conference;
the Future Oaks CIC launch by Lopemede Farm; and
New Local’s annual Stronger Things Conference.
Our summer has started with purpose, energy and momentum — exactly how we intend to continue.
A clear theme emerged across these events: community support, collaboration and impactful partnerships are essential if we are to address the gaps that the current healthcare system cannot solve alone.
Is this innovation, or is it a return to the basics?
We believe good healthcare must place self-management at the centre, supported by trusted local VCSE organisations as a vital next layer of care.
If primary care reconnects people with themselves, their communities and their local support networks, can it work?
At Khepera CIC, we believe it can. That belief is why we have been doing this work for the past 10 years.
Over the past month, we have been inspired to refocus on our mission: supporting our community to transform their health. A growing body of research continues to support what we have long believed: the food we eat plays a central role in managing our health, and early support from the right people can improve outcomes for everyone, regardless of socio-economic background or ethnicity.
This raises an urgent question: why do inequality and access still remain barriers to good health in the 21st century?
Our mission to reduce health inequalities is the reason our founding director started Khepera CIC. As a Black woman who grew up on a housing estate in one of the poorest areas of High Wycombe, she experienced these barriers first-hand. She saw how race, income and access can shape people’s experience of healthcare, diagnosis and treatment. She also saw how highly processed food is often cheaper and more accessible in deprived areas, while healthier options remain harder to reach. This is unfair, and it continues to widen the health divide.
It was encouraging to hear about initiatives across the country that are already driving change, including:
· Hackney Council challenging the dominance of large companies in council contracts where outcomes are not being delivered;
· Lopemede Farm and farms across the country opening their doors to educate children about farming and food;
· Buckinghamshire Council working with VCSE organisations to support families and young people;
· CICs being given land and premises to support community food growing and local food initiatives; and
· Steve Reed MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, working with New Local on reports that explore how health programmes can be shaped with residents and VCSE organisations.
These examples matter because, through our work, we see the urgent need for change in each of these areas. We are no longer holding back on bold, practical ideas. We mean business. We are refocusing, realigning with our values and preparing to make an even greater impact over the next 10 years.
